Professional Honeybee REMOVAL &Relocation
In Ontario, honeybees are more than just insects; they are essential pollinators responsible for the health of our local food systems. Unlike traditional pest control, we do not view bees as "pests" to be exterminated. We provide a specialized Live Bee Removal and Relocation service. We use zero chemical pesticides, ensuring that every colony is safely moved to our own, or another local Ontario apiary to continue its vital work.
1. Professional Identification & Hive Mapping
Not every stinging insect is a honeybee. Our first priority is identifying the species and the exact location of the colony.
-
Species Verification: We distinguish between Honeybees (protected/relocatable) and other stinging insects. Our "No-Kill" relocation is specifically designed for honeybee colonies.
-
Thermal Imaging: Bees maintain a consistent hive temperature of approximately $35^{\circ}C$ ($95^{\circ}F$). We use thermal cameras to "see" through your walls and pinpoint the exact size and location of the hive without unnecessary drilling.
-
Structural Assessment: We determine the best point of entry—whether through a soffit, brickwork, or interior drywall—to reach the colony with minimal structural impact.
2. The Live Removal Process (The "No-Kill" Method)
We utilize specialized equipment designed to keep the bees calm and healthy during the transition.
The Gentle Bee Vacuum
We use a custom-engineered, low-suction "bee vacuum" that gently gathers the adult bees into a ventilated capture box without harming them. This allows us to clear the area safely before handling the delicate honeycomb.
Comb Extraction & Queen Capture
-
Locating the Queen: The success of a relocation depends on the Queen. Once she is safely secured in a queen cage, the rest of the colony will naturally follow her scent.
-
Comb Removal: We carefully cut out the wax combs. If the combs are healthy, we "rubber band" them into wooden frames so the bees have their own stores of honey and brood (baby bees) when they arrive at their new home.
3. Pheromone Scrubbing & Structural Seal
Removing the bees is only half the job. If the scent of the hive remains, a new swarm will likely move into the same spot within a year.
-
Wax & Propolis Removal: We meticulously scrape away all remnants of wax and propolis (bee glue).
-
Odor Neutralization: We use specialized enzyme cleaners to neutralize the "nesting pheromones" that attract other bees.
-
Insulation & Blocking: We fill the void with new insulation and seal the entry point with permanent, bee-proof materials to ensure your home is no longer an attractive nesting site.
4. Relocation to ours, or an Ontario Apiary
Once the colony is safely boxed, they are transported to our own, or a local registered apiary.
-
Integration: The bees are moved into a standard Langstroth, or Flow hive body.
-
Quarantine & Care: Local beekeepers monitor the colony to ensure the Queen is laying and the bees are adapting to their new environment.
-
Eco-Contribution: By choosing relocation, you are directly supporting Ontario’s biodiversity and local honey production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it illegal to kill honeybees in Ontario?
While there is significant public and political pressure to protect pollinators, the main reason to avoid killing them is environmental and structural. In Ontario, many beekeepers and specialists work together to uphold a "no-kill" standard. Furthermore, killing a hive in a wall without removing the honey leads to rotting wax and fermenting honey that will damage your home.
Why don't you use pesticides?
Pesticides are toxic to the environment and unnecessary for bee control. More importantly, if you kill a hive inside a wall with chemicals, the honey and wax remain. Without the bees to "fan" and cool the hive, the wax melts, and the honey seeps into your drywall, attracting ants, roaches, and rodents.
What happens to the honey you remove?
"Wild" honey from a residential wall can contain dust, insulation, or previous cleaning residues. We typically leave the honey with the bees in the relocation frames to give them the energy they need to build their new home at the apiary.
How long does the process take?
A standard structural bee removal typically takes between 30 minutes and several hours, depending on the size of the colony and the complexity of the access.
